Restaurant Le Procope (Les Frères Blanc) 13, rue de l'Anceinne Comédie 75006 Paris Tel 01 40 46 79 00. Known to be one of the oldest cafés of the western world. Start with the Oysters from Bretagne or Terrine de Foies de Volaille followed by the traditional Coq au vin. In 1686 Francesco Procopio dei Coltelli, gentleman from Palermo started the café in Rue des Fossés Sain Germain (today rue de l'Ancienne Comédie). The excellence of the bar and also serving sorbets, in friendly atmosphere and neighbourhood where l'Ancienne Comédie Française was also situated, it quickly became meeting place for good souls and minds. Hence, arguably, was born the first literray café in the western world. During more than two centuries, all known names, or who hoped to be known, in the world of writing, of arts and politics and liberal philosophy, frequented the Café Procope. So this is an obvious tip but it deserves the mention anyway Heidelberg Schloss Restaurant. Just by the castle. Elegant restaurant. Good German kitchen. If you are there in the spring time ask for asparagus from Schwetzingen. Arguably the best in the world. In any case don't argue with anybody in Heidelberg about asparagus. One of the oldest Jazz joints in the country. All the big names paid a visit here. Good Creole food, but you really come for the music. 2 shows per night.
